For clients

    Your privacy and your rights

What your practice keeps about you, who can see it, and what you can ask for.

    What is kept

Your practice keeps a record of your care: your contact details, appointments, session notes, any questionnaires you fill in, and billing. If you agreed to recording, recordings and transcripts may be kept for a time too.

    Who can see it

Your therapist, and anyone working with them under the same duty of confidentiality, such as a clinical supervisor. Your record is shared with others only with your consent, or where the law requires it.

    What you can ask for

Depending on where you live, you may be able to:

    • see your record or get a copy of it
    • ask for something to be corrected
    • know who your record has been shared with
    • withdraw a consent you gave
    • make a complaint to the body that oversees privacy where you live

    How to ask

Ask your therapist, in person or in writing. They can tell you how long records are kept where they practise and how to make any of these requests.
